Architecture and artists

Many famous architects were involved in construction of the Luhačovice spa and contributed to outstanding and unique face of the town. Bohuslav Fuchs contributed to construction of Bílá čtvrť (White Suburb), J L Holzl designed the Arco Hotel (Morava Spa Hotel now), the Kuba brothers co-designed the Sokol club gymnasium the construction of which was completed in 1930.Beautiful and nicely decorated parks, statues and fountains are typical of the spa environment. The best known fountain is the Brussels fountain. It was originally created by Jan Kavan for Czechoslovakia's pavilion at the 1958 Brussels Expo world exhibition. Later, the fountain was transported to Luhačovice.

Works by the architect Dušan Jurkovič contributed considerably to creation of the modern and comfortable spa. His works understand the spa's cultural milieu and environment. Visitors to the spa can feel this in the Jurkovič House (the Jan House, in past) located on the Spa Square, in Villa Chaloupka (the little cottage villa that has been beautifully reconstructed), in the charming Sun Spa building, in the Jestřábí House or in the Hydrotherapeutic Baths building.

The cultural life in the spa welcomed a new theatre that was opened in 1908. The construction was funded by the Association for Construction of a Theatre in the Spa and the most important person behind this was the spa physician Doctor Zikmund Janke. After 1945, the management of the spa started extensive reconstruction of the main square. The Great Colonnade with an impressive curved plan is relieved by the glass front that looks into the natural environment. The monumental Vincentka spring hall is relaxed by horizontal lines of the Small Colonnade and the diagnostics institute.

Artists in Luhačovice

Music has always played an important role in the cultural life of the spa. It was regarded as a part of therapy because of its positive effects on the health of the patients. Colonnade concerts are organised on afternoons and are an integral part of the life in the spa. Many artists stayed in the Luhačovice spa as patients and supported the health resort later. Composer Leoš Janáček visited Luhačovice twenty-five times. This was his favourite town for relaxation, therapy, composing and a prominent source of inspiration. In Luhačovice, he composed majority of his Glalolitic mass and prepared sketches for his opera The Cunning Little Vixen. Luhačovické Zálesí was his favourite region for collection of folk songs. Every year, a music festival, which is called Janáček and Luhačovice, is held to celebrate Janáček’s music heritage.
